Australia’s colonial history haunts and affects us modern Aussies, and there’s nothing as richly evocative of our conflicted sense of national identity as our best-loved historical figure: An iron-clad Irish Selector outlaw whose horse-stealing, gun-toting war on police and the English Empire gathered enormous public support, and is remembered as "the last expression of the lawless frontier in what was becoming a highly organised and educated society, the last protest of the mighty bush now tethered with iron rails to Melbourne and the world.”*
This locally produced deck of Kelly Gang Playing Cards was produced from a Kickstarter campaign, and features the work of designer Erik Suswanto. With a limited production run, gilt package details and linen card stock, these cards make a lovely and durable keepsake of your travels, or a great gift for the card player in your life.
Court Cards feature original illustrations of the four core members of the Kelly Gang (including details of their preferred weapons), while the Jokers pay tribute to two characters - the outlaw Ned in the now famous suit of armour* from his last stand at Glenrowan, and his remarkable mother Ellen, who outlived convict transportation to Australia and 7 of her 12 children.
The card backing features a magnificent gilt-finished illustration celebrating Ned’s famous (supposed) last words as he was led to the gallows at Old Melbourne Gaol: “Such is life”.
The Kelly Gang Playing Cards were created by Pierre Huetter.
