Flinders Street Station is Melbourne's busiest, and in the 1920s was reportedly the busiest in the world! Like any much-used public building, our beloved Flinders Street Station is a scrapbook of well more than a century's refurbishments, repairs and improvements. The lovely blue hand-painted station signs in the tiled underpass have survived generations of change, to become one of the most whimsical elements of a deeply romatic structure.*
Harper and Charlie make original retro prints celebrating the culture, architecture and design of Melbourne and Australia.
Inspired by art from the 1950s and 60s, Harper and Charlie use vintage print techniques to achieve their authentic feel. If you look closely you might be able to spot the careful details - slipped registration, slight colour-bleed, or light scuffs in the design - that give these beautiful prints their warmth and character.
All Harper and Charlie prints are designed and made right here in Melbourne using the highest quality commercial grade inks. All prints use premium grade Ilford 180gsm matt paper.
Large prints will be posted carefully rolled in a tube and protected with a layer of brown paper. A4 prints will be posted flat, sandwiched between Kraft board.
Material(s): Commercial grade pigment inks, ILFORD 180gsm matt paper.
Dimensions (cm): Small - 27 x 21 (A4), medium - 40 x 30 (A3), large - 80 x 60 (A1).
* Other romantic aspects of the vast edifice include a network of 'abandoned spaces' including a secret and hidden ballroom, the rumour of a space under the station that once functioned as a roller skating rink, and the preservation of heritage blue and white tile "do not spit" signs - which recently survived a hundred-million dollar refurbishment. Rumours about what secret places Flinders Street Station still hides are fed by the secrecy about what these spaces actually are, and their decades long closure to the public.
