About The Melbourne Map:
The first Melbourne Map was published in 1990 and became the highest selling poster of its time - doing without the advantages of the internet or social media to make its way into tens of thousands of homes and businesses locally, interstate and overseas. A labour of love, the Melbourne Map was originally conceived in 1985 by founders Melinda Clarke and Deborah Young, and it took a mortgage, $80,000, and countless hours spent researching and preparing drawings before the first Map was published in 1990.
By 2016 significant changes to Melbourne’s skyline meant that the original Melbourne Map no longer reflected our modern city. An initial plan to use technology to scan the old map and add the new buildings was quickly scuppered as being unrealistic -so much had changed!- and a new illustration was started from scratch.
This fresh new version of The Melbourne Map is researched and designed in-house, and has been hand illustrated and digitally coloured with immense precision and innumerable hours of research. Changes from the original design include the addition of Federation Square, Docklands precinct, the new Melbourne Sport & Entertainment precincts, Birrarung Marr, Crown Casino and Southbank, Southern Cross Station, Melbourne Museum and countless new city buildings! In addition to recognising that Melbourne had changed over the years, the designers realised that our beloved city had grown substantially since those early days of the late 80’s, and the 2019 map has been extended to the north and over into the Western suburbs, to include inner-city fringes such as Williamstown, Newport, Yarraville, Seddon and Footscray.
Chief Illustrator Lewis Brownlie initially used pencil to draft in all the streets and buildings then inked the final illustration. Deborah Young (character illustrator and original artist of the first Melbourne Map) added further character to the drawing to include people, boats, cars and numerous surprising and whimsical details. The detail, research and precision of the drawing meant that the new illustration took almost two and a half years!
The Melbourne Map is a wonderful addition to homes and public spaces, and makes a great conversation starter, or gift for loved ones far away. Many of our earliest customers purchased the new Melbourne Map to frame alongside their original 1990 edition!
Illustrators: Lewis Brownlie (chief illustrator), Deborah Young (character Illustrator) and Sean Rodwell (digital colourist).
