Built in 1927 to replace a cinema that had been lost to fire, the opening of the massive 'Palais Pictures' building officially confirmed St Kilda's identity as Melbourne's leisure district. As the years went by the Palais became better known as a theatre hosting live performance, surviving the years when St Kilda was better known as a dangerous 'red light' district, and several near-closures and changes of ownership. Inspired by art from the 1950s and 60s, Harper and Charlie use vintage print techniques to achieve their authentic feel. If you look closely you might be able to spot the careful details - slipped registration, slight colour-bleed, or light scuffs in the design - that give these beautiful prints their warmth and character.
All Harper and Charlie prints are designed and made right here in Melbourne using the highest quality commercial grade inks. All prints use premium grade Ilford 180gsm matt paper.
Large prints will be posted carefully rolled in a tube and protected with a layer of brown paper. A4 prints will be posted flat, sandwiched between Kraft board.
