Melbourne, 1894: the city had become one of the largest in the world, rivalling New York and London in size and wealth. The Gold Rush of the 1850s poured fuel into Melbourne's vigorous growth. By the 1880s - just ten years later - Victoria's capital had doubled its population. The city was booming!
Alas, this affluence was to come to an end. By 1894 Melbourne was in the midst of an economic depression - but the gold rush era had left a useful legacy: a shiny new network of roads, railways and services that shapes our city to this day.
This map tells the story of Melbourne on the rise and fall: a city that always bounces back no matter what challenges it faces along the way. The Melbourne we love. Our exclusive Melbourne Map Bookmark is a small keepsake of our storied city - a handy and lovely reminder of your travels, or a thoughtful small something to send to loved ones far away.
