The term 'Marvellous Melbourne' was first coined by the British press during the 1880s following the Victorian gold rush and resulting building boom. Balconies and verandahs of the period were adorned with ornate cast-iron 'petticoats'. By 1900, 161 different designs for decorative cast iron had been registered by local foundries.
Designer Helena Harry studied fine art at Melbourne's VCA before moving to Europe where she trained and began a successful international career in architecture.
