The term 'Marvellous Melbourne' was first coined by the British press during the 1880s following the building boom of the Victorian gold rush. Landlords with full purses competed to put flourishes on even the most modest working people's accommodation, and balconies and verandahs of the period were adorned with ornate cast-iron 'petticoats'. By 1900 the fad for 'iron lace' was so robust that 161 different designs for decorative cast iron had been registered by local foundries. Helena Harry's Marvellous Melbourne Terrace House Card celebrates Melbourne's gold rush heritage with a nod to the terrace facades made handsome by the wealth of the era.
Designer Helena Harry studied fine art at Melbourne's VCA before moving to Europe where she trained and began a successful international career in architecture. Today she continues her architectural and design practice from Melbourne. This greeting card design focuses on the iconic architecture, culture and design of our favourite city.
