Street art is an endless collaboration in a radically inclusive gallery, where the work of international names gets cosy with dabblers, beginners and one-hit painters inspired by an impassioned moment.
Whether in the open air of alleyways or secreted inside parking garages or abandoned buildings, Melbourne's street art is colourful, raw, topical, witty and often (very often) controversial.
Melbourne has long been renowned for its dynamic street art scene. Stencils, paste-ups, installations and sprayed, rolled and brushed paintings appear overnight on city streets all over our sprawling city. Only rarely making it into a gallery, photographs are often our best way of accessing the storied history of these images, both historical and contemporary.
Burn City is a witness and a celebration of street art photographed around Melbourne over the last eight years.
