Mostly Autumn is a time to reflect on the fabulous city we are so lucky to inhabit!

Summer in The City January 07 2017, 0 Comments

Yes it's hot...or not!

It's Summer in Melbourne Town and anything can happen; sun, steam, rain, hail - expect it all. It's the season of affogatos in cafes with extensive slabs of cool, cool terrazzo flooring and tall, icy, pink drinks on rooftop bars at sunset. Not to mention; bayside picnics under shady umbrellas, cards on the front veranda on rainy days and Melbourne's ever growing selection of great outdoor cinemas on balmy evenings (don't forget the mozzi repellent).

So Now We Are 3 November 15 2016, 0 Comments

This week marks the 3rd anniversary of the opening of our Bourke St shop. What a milestone and what a time we've had establishing this little local business on beautiful Bourke Hill.
Last week as we stood on the footpath in front of the shop to observe a minute's silence at 11am on 11/11 we were moved and proud to be among our neighbours; fellow traders, city workers and visitors alike in a brief, reflective moment of thankfulness and remembrance.
We're very proud and grateful to be here at this time, part of a community in this marvellous city and we hope to be here for many seasons to come.

Autumn in Melbourne March 05 2016, 0 Comments

Autumn is probably our favourite season in Melbourne; leafy strolls in the parks, Moomba and the Garden Show, the Comedy Festival, the promise of scarf wearing, hot chocolate weather, cool evenings on rooftop bars, figs, footy and new soup recipes to try.

It's still a little warm... but Autumn is truly on it's way.

For the fellas… how to accessorise in winter August 03 2015, 0 Comments

This is a guest blog post by Sally Mackinnon, one of Melbourne’s most experienced Personal Stylists specialising in men’s style, with over 8 years’ experience in the industry. A Melbourne CBD resident, Sally has a great love for the city and a strong affiliation with Melbourne’s retailers. Sally’s expertise is her ability to make her clients feel confident in a fashion world that can be overwhelming. Sally recommends wardrobe, shopping and fashion advice that is clear and easy to implement for men and women, regardless of their budget. Whilst shopping with Sally, you might also learn a thing or two about the wonderful city of Melbourne!

www.styledbysally.com.au

Let’s face it, when it comes to winter most people revert to a daily uniform of black and grey. Black coats, black boots, black jeans, dark grey suits and scarves.

But your ‘Melbourne Black’ winter wardrobe can easily be brightened up and there’s no excuse with a great range of men’s accessories available at Melbournalia this season.

To reflect the resurgence in men’s style, accessories are becoming key in setting your style apart from every other bloke in town.

Made in Melbourne’s Otto and Spike create a range of luxury knitted scarves that are guaranteed to work in with your existing pieces. For the corporate guy, I love this 100 percent premium surplus Australian and New Zealand lambswool ‘diffused scarf’ with it’s a pop of texture and forest green (pictured below) It’s a great way to lift to a dark suit and of course keep you nice and warm on your morning commute to work.

Don’t be afraid to team a colourful or patterned scarf to your look. It will lift your outfit and create interest to your style. Guys, don’t leave us women to have all the fun with colour and pattern.

Another one of my favourites is Otto and Spike’s Tram I Am Melbourne scarf (pictured right)

A quirky nod to Melbourne’s famous old W-Class trams, this 100% merino extra fine wool scarf can be worn with a business suit or to the footy over a coat and jeans. Available in a range of colours, you can keep things simple in black and grey or have some fun with some colour like this fabulous ink and burnt orange.

So you have your scarf, now how do you wear it?

This is a question I get asked a lot. My answer: keep it simple. The traditional ‘loop and through’ not only looks neat and effortless, it’s also a great way to keep your neck warm. This is the perfect way to wear shorter scarves, particularly with a jacket, trench or coat.

For a more contemporary look, tie your scarf loosely around the neck with the two ends falling vertically. This works best with longer scarves, and can be a great way to accessories a more causal look of jeans and a jumper.

Don’t think winter woolens are restricted to pieces designed specifically to keep you warm. Otto and Spike’s 100% extra fine merino wool knitted Double Negative ties are a great way to add some interest to your work wardrobe. This black and grey checked tie (pictured left) looks great with a black or charcoal suit and a classic white shirt. Or team casually with a black shirt and denim jacket for the weekends.

If you’re the more creative sort who’s not afraid to get a little quirky, then you should try these hankies (below) by Hanky Fever. Made from 100 percent cotton and made in Australia, you can use as an actual hanky, or why not try as a pocket square? There are some fun prints to try like the coffee lovers and in keeping with our Melbourne theme, the old W-Class trams.

And finally, if you like a point of difference but want to be a little more discreet about it, try some socks.

These bamboo diamond socks (pictured left) made in Australia by Lafitte come in a range of great colours and prints. Breathable and very absorbent, these socks draw moisture away from the skin, are anti-fungal, odour resistant, eco friendly and biodegradable. Winner!

Winter on Bourke Hill July 21 2015, 0 Comments

Melbourne does winter well, and does it in style too! Rather than waiting out the cold, Melbourne decides to take the winter chill head on, and that’s exactly what we are doing at Melbournalia!

For those who haven’t been in recently, our store is now kitted out with a great new window display by Otto and Spike, featuring their much loved, locally made knitwear.

Start off your evening with a steaming bowl of minestrone at Pellegrini’s a few doors along, browse through some great book collections at The Paperback Books, and come on in to check out our window display, new knitwear in stock, and celebrate winter on Bourke Hill.

New window opening: The Dusty Caravan jewellery July 18 2014, 0 Comments

Join us from 6pm Wednesday 23 July as we enter the sublime and surreal world ofThe Dusty Caravan. Hollie M Kelley will transform the Liverpool St windows into an aviary of whimsy, showcasing her latest works in brass, glass, leather and feather.

Kelley makes all Dusty Caravan jewellery by hand in her studio in a former printing factory in Richmond, and all her materials are ethically sourced: the brass, sterling silver and gold is reclaimed; the vintage glass is dead stock; the feathers are either naturally shed from her own birds and chickens or sourced from cruelty-free suppliers; and all leather is recycled. Even the packaging is locally made from sustainably sourced materials.

On Wednesday night we'll be serving mulled wine and hot nuts, and afterwards we encourage you to hit the town for Nite Art - the city's annual after-dark choose your own artventure of more than 40 art sites in the CBD.

Festival of Steve May 13 2014, 0 Comments

Having done good by their mums, Melbourne's men are in for a treat on 24 May when the Festival of Steve returns to that most friendly of gentlemen's clubs, the Kelvin Club.

Tucked down the end of Melbourne Pl near the corner of Russell & Lt Collins Sts, the Kelvin Club is resplendent in wood-panelling, leather club lounges, billiards tables, dim lighting and a sense of secret society. Most inclusively, women are welcome too.

On 24 May, Melbourne's independent retailers will take over the joint for a men's shopping event focused on fashion, quality local goods, grooming, music and informative lectures on how to win at billiards, work a poker face, and taste the past while drinking scotch whisky. ARIA-nominated Jason Walker will perform, Carl Nave will advise how to select the right suit, and V&J Menswear will survey styling and grooming through the ages.

Melbournalia gents Dale Campisi and Michael Brady will be there with a specially curated men's edit of local goods, including new scarves, ties and beanies from Otto & Spike; shoelaces by Mavericks; and must-have books from Hardie Grant, Arcade and Thames & Hudson. Plus free tips on where else to eat, drink and shop around town.

March into Melbournalia this month March 09 2014, 0 Comments

The city goes a little crazy in March with festival fever right across town. There's the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, Moomba, Fashion Festival, International Flower & Garden Show and Queer Film Festival.

Of course, we know Melbourne's cool all year round. Dale rounded up a few of his fave hangouts for the current issue of Qantas's inflight magazine The Australian Way, including fellow Bourke Hill locals Rosa's Kitchen and rooftop bar Siglo. Read the article here

March is a special month on Bourke Hill as the plane trees begin their annual fall and the amber light drenches the city streets with its final flush of summer sun. Pop in and say g'day on your next mosey about town, or make a beeline for the store to see what's new

Among the sweetest new stock is Andy Walker and Gabriela Holland's Pop Plant concrete pots (pictured above). After moving into an inner city flat in 2012, they began to crave some greenery and slowly began to fill their home with indoor plants. It didn’t take long before they became incurable plantaholics.

Needing vessels to home their ever-increasing collection, they began to experiment with concrete to create their own planters. Their espresso collection above repurposes used takeaway coffee cups as casts. A little colour et voila - Melbourne's most stylish pots were created! Perfect for low maintenance succulents or even an indigenous creepy violet or daisy from our range of seedlings available in store.

Bourke Hill - you're gonna love it January 31 2014, 0 Comments

Laneways, restaurants, bars, cafes, books and music, local goods, souvenirs, art, bespoke fashion, heritage buildings and a rich history – Bourke Hill has something for everyone.

Bourke Hill is experiencing something of a second coming, with seven new businesses opening in the historic precinct in late 2013. These are: local goods and souvenir store Melbournalia (that's us!); the Spring Street Grocer and its gelateria; restaurants Rice Paper Scissors and Ruyi; Seven Seeds offshoot The Traveller; a new rooftop bar by the guys behind Loop and a new pizza bar by the guys at Mess Hall. There’s a real buzz about the place again, and locals and visitors are lapping it up.

Chosen as the site for parliament for its commanding outlook across the city, Bourke Hill is the city’s crown. Parliament House and St Patrick’s Cathedral tower over the city, and in its lee on Spring Street are the iconic Princess Theatre and Windsor Hotel – both charming examples of the city’s lavish Gold Rush architecture. Spring Street bustles with café goers, long lunchers, and gelato lovers too.

Leafy Bourke Street and its picturesque lanes are home to some of the city’s best shopping, including bespoke fashion on Crossley Street; books, music, local goods, souvenirs, contemporary and indigenous art on Bourke St; and modern pan-Asian restaurants on Liverpool Street. You’ll find more great bars and restaurants on Meyers Place, and numerous others hidden away on rooftops and around corners too, including everyone’s favourite Madame Brussels.

There are great photo opportunities out front of iconic Pellegrinis – one of the first cafes to serve espresso coffee in Melbourne – and down any of the lanes off Bourke Street. The historic Job Warehouse, one of the oldest buildings on the city grid, is a favourite among photographers for its rustic Parisian charm. Celebrity chef Guy Grossi and his family run three restaurants here – upscale Florentino, classic Cellar Bar and casual Ombra – alfresco dining here is a quintessential Melbourne experience.

Chinatown is just half a block away, and with more than ten hotels located in the precinct, Bourke Hill is a great place to base yourself to explore the city or just take it easy.
